Screen Systems

CMW design and install custom-made energy-saving, shade, light pollution, or blackout screens in the roof or sides of any greenhouse type, large or small, new or old. Our screen systems can be single or multiple layers or multiple functions within a single layer. So special screen types are now available to cater to a wide range of applications. Whatever kind of screen you need, CMW has the expertise and the experience to give you a screening system that does the job effectively and remains trouble-free for many years. We have a well-established supply chain of industry leaders such as Ludwig Svennson, Bonar Phormium, and Valk who provide our quality components and materials.

The latest screens deliver significantly better energy-saving and light transmission than screens installed a few years ago. Recladding and refurbishment of an older screening system can make a very smart investment. CMW offers a complete refurbishment service. The CMW refurbishment service includes replacement of support wires and update of the screen mechanics where necessary. Refurbishment can be carried out either after the crop is removed or while it is still in production. According to recent research, uneven temperatures are the main reason why many growers struggle to maintain the ideal greenhouse climate. Greenhouses have always been susceptible to having a ‘cold side’ despite advances in both overhead and side screens, so problems occur in every type of greenhouse whether new or old.

When the screen and vents are closed in cold weather, cold air above the screen ‘rolls’ along the top of the screen to the lowest point, where it has some cooling effect on the crop below. When the screen is gapped or opened the cold air drops onto the crop, causing a significantly lower temperature in the growing area below the screen at that end. The resulting temperature difference between one end of a row or bench and the other can be considerable and is very likely to cause significant delays in flowering or fruit ripening at the coldest end. Higher humidity at the cold end also presents a significant disease risk.

The solution: Apex Seals

By installing vertical partitions of LS Solarwoven material at intervals between the horizontal overhead screen and the greenhouse roof, the cold air above the screen is prevented from collecting at one end, and therefore the temperature differential in the growing area below is reduced or eliminated.

The diaphragm screen consists of two screen curtains on top of each other which both have been built from counterfoils of aluminium and transparent cloth. By sliding the curtains over each other incident light is entering slightly anad can be moved over (and the other way around) within some seconds of maximum to minimum screening. Fading light, air humidity, and CO2 levels can be regulated more rapidly and in a more flexible way.

Energy is the number one issue in Northern European intensive greenhouse production. Not only because of the direct impact rising energy costs have on every grower’s bottom line, but also because of the increasing retailer and consumer awareness of carbon footprint and sustainability issues which increases the pressure on growers to reduce their energy use.

With 20 years of experience installing energy screens in greenhouses of every shape and size and a clear focus on quality, CMW is a very reliable partner when the time comes to choose a suitable energy screen. CMW’s in-house project management, installation, and maintenance crew use the latest all-terrain equipment and scissor lifts to ensure that every project runs smoothly and on time, with minimum disruption to the everyday nursery operation.

The latest screens deliver significantly better energy-saving and light transmission than screens installed a few years ago. After years of service, the original energy-saving performance of screens deteriorates with normal wear and tear. Furthermore, the light transmission of once transparent screens is adversely affected by the accumulation of dust and algae, etc. Given the well-established rule that a 1% reduction in light reduces yield by 1%, good light transmission is a must for daytime screen deployment. So contaminated screens won’t allow you to get the benefit of extra daytime energy saving without severely affecting production, and worn screens will not reach their original energy-saving performance. Taken together, these factors can make recladding and refurbishment of an older screening system a very smart investment.

With an unstoppable trend towards reduced use of pesticides, insect mesh now plays a crucial role in preventing harmful insects from entering the greenhouse via the ventilation system. CMW has been active in the development, supply, and assembly of Markies® insect mesh systems in greenhouses since 1990 and is able to offer an insect mesh system for all greenhouses with continuous ridge ventilation.

The insect mesh in our Markies® system stands almost vertical in the window opening and thus provides optimal utilisation of the ventilation. Through the use of horizontal ribs, the mesh folds like a concertina behind the shadow edge of the purlin. This clever method ensures minimum light loss and can be installed in both new and existing greenhouses.

Alternatively, CMW is able to offer a unique prefabricated mesh system designed for 1, 2, or 3 pane vents in Venlo greenhouses. As the system for continuous vents, this also operates by means of a ribbed bellows construction. This clever cassette ensures that the mesh always folds in the right place, resulting in the long working life of the system. The cassette is pre-assembled in the factory so that it can be installed quickly and simply in both new and existing greenhouses.

The Combimatic® is a two-in-one screen that allows you to combine different energy and/or blackout cloths. Both cloths are installed on the same layer, and because they are placed one behind the other, the Combimatic® packs them a minimum of space. Especially unique on the Combimatic® is its fully automatic operation. With a simple press of a button, you have the screen of your choice over your crop. The best screen recipe each day.

Evesham grower Martin Boers, founder of herbs specialists Wow! Micro Leaf, has 8 Combimatic screens installed. ”Combimatic was the right choice for me because I needed energy-saving, shading, and prevention of light pollution in the same greenhouse, and I was reluctant to invest in multiple screens. The Combimatic gives me all those functions without duplication of some mechanical components or the extra labour to install another screen, so they’ve saved me money – and it frees up the lower trellis for my supplementary lights’. Martin’s Combimatic screens are controlled by a special Combimatic module in his Priva computer to ensure good control.

Shade screens have become one of the most important tools in the modern grower’s armoury. By intelligent use of the shade screen, the grower is able to manipulate both light and/or humidity to maintain the ideal greenhouse climate. This not only ensures maximum production and quality but also creates a more pleasant working environment for staff. Deployment of the screen at night or in low light conditions can also contribute significantly to energy saving.

Available in several types and configurations. The principle of the CMW side screen makes it as unique as it is durable. The roller tube is located in the middle, which means the fabric is rolled up evenly across its entire length. We also have the possibility to combine different types of fabric on the upper and lower halves of the screen.

Depending on the goal, you can create the ideal roller side screen (energy saving, blackout, climate wall, etc.). Alternatively, in combination with top screens, side screens are essential for optimal, even, the horizontal temperature distribution in the greenhouse.

Roller sides are also ideal for blacking out the greenhouse and reducing light emissions. The roller side is largely integrated into the greenhouse construction.
